Critiqued: Inside the Minds of 25 Leaders in Graphic Design, is a compact, action-oriented guide to current design thinking and communication design. It takes readers on a journey with the author who travels to meet 25 established designers with her poster in tow. At each stop, the designer critiques the poster and talks with the author about his or her design process. Using this information, the author redesigns her poster before heading to the next critique-a process similar to the children's game of telephone. The reader will experience how designers see the world and what influences them through the design of a single message. Each chapter features a short design brief, which guides the reader through different approaches in design and lets them compare multiple perspectives. It features interviews and critiques by leading figures from the design world, including Paula Scher, Experimental Jetset, Maira Kalman, Luna Maurer, Steven Heller, and Jessica Helfand. Ultimately, readers will learn how to think about their own work in new ways. Do you focus on the language or the form? Do you think about how each piece relates to another? Are you constantly asking yourself, Why? How do you know when a design is finished? Answering these questions will help the reader think about their own work and how they approach design. The book also raises questions about the nature of collaboration, ownership, authorship, and critique in an increasingly social world.
